If you're using Preview exclusively, I doubt you'll have a problem. It's usually just a conflict between Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro. That should cover all the bases, but I've found that opening PDFs from Firefox (which includes Zotero) can be a little inconsistent, sometimes opening with one program, sometimes another. Click on the drop-down list beside this and select the program you want Firefox to use to handle these files (again, Preview). Click on the Applications tab, then type "Portable" in the search bar or scroll down to "Portable Document Format". In Firefox: Open Firefox's Preferences window. Once you've selected it, click the "Change All" button to make this the default for all PDF files on your system. Click on the drop-down list and select which program you want to use (Preview, in this case). You may need to press the little grey arrow to see everything in this section. In the little window that pops up, there will be a line marked "Open with". Firstly, open WorkinTool and click Tool Box > Protect PDF. In the OS: Right-click on a PDF file and click "Get Info". Follow the easy guide below to protect your scanned PDF with a password. Some combination of these should do the trick. I'm honestly a little fuzzy on how the two decide on conflicts, but here's how to set it in each one. The program used to open file types is decided by Firefox and/or your operating system.
